Watching Someone Play Me on BET+ American Gangster: Trap Queens Season 4 Was Surreal—Here’s What Stood Out Most

As the days built up to the release of American Gangster: Trap Queens Season 4 on BET+, people kept asking me the same question: “How do you feel?”

Honestly… it was a mix of emotions. Excitement, nervousness, curiosity—so much was running through my mind. But one thing I was especially curious about was: Who did they cast to play me? You know, for the flashback scenes. (I don’t even know the technical name for it, but you get it.)

Throughout filming, they asked me for pictures from different stages of my life—childhood, young adulthood, business owner—just a full timeline of looks. So in the back of my mind, I couldn’t stop wondering: Who would they choose to portray me?

When I finally saw the episode, I said, “Oh yeah, I see it. I see why they picked her.” I was genuinely pleased with the casting and how everything came out.

A friend of mine, knowing how curious I was, actually found her on social media. She had made a post saying she was playing Sharita Mathis on BET+ American Gangster: Trap Queens. Of course, I had to reach out—and I’m so glad I did.

Tonight, I had the chance to talk to her and hear about her experience firsthand. She told me she applied for the role through a casting website, went through the audition process, and got the part. She shared how there were multiple wigs on set, makeup artists and stylists studying my old photos, doing their best to replicate my different looks and stages of life.

I asked her what her favorite scene was. She said it was the argument scene with Antonio—mainly because she usually plays more “good girl” roles. That scene allowed her to tap into a more fiery, bossed-up version of herself. Her second favorite moment? Dressing up in all the designer clothes and furs—she said that was a blast too.

But what meant the most to me was when she told me this: she made it her mission to humanize me. She felt connected to my story, especially around my intentions—why I made certain decisions, why I did what I did, and how much of it was about providing for my family. She said a lot of people, in similar circumstances, would have made the same decisions.

That really touched me. Because when I agreed to do this episode, I was intentional about showing not just what was happening on the outside, but what was happening on the inside. I didn’t want to be glamorized or villainized—I wanted people to understand the full journey. Hearing her say that she understood that—and wanted to make sure it came through in her portrayal—meant the world to me.

It was a beautiful conversation. I’ll definitely be following along with her career because I know she’s going to go far in this industry. She’s incredibly talented, and I thank her for representing me well.

I told her it was surreal to watch someone else play me—but I also told her something else: this won’t be the last time someone plays me. Next time, it won’t be for a story about mistakes and survival… it’ll be for my legacy, for the life I’m building now, for the things I accomplish from here forward.

This was just the beginning. My story is still being written.

Thank you again for doing me justice. I’ll be cheering you on from here—and who knows? Maybe we’ll cross paths again on an even bigger stage.
