What Would You Do?

What would you do if you were me? An inmate who is about to reenter the world. This was the question I asked a trusted advisor yesterday who has a lot of experience with federal prison. I inquired because I have heard that a lot of people have a hard time initially transitioning back into society. From the "inside" all you think about is getting out. However, I am learning that with this newfound freedom, newfound problems also come. In preparation for my release, I am open to any and all advice in order to best prepare myself.

My trusted advisor's response:

1. Take a moment to decompress. I know you want to get out there and take the bull by the horns. You want to jump right back in and get going and make up for lost time. However, I would be gentle with yourself and give yourself a moment to settle in mentally and emotionally.

2. I would make connections with others that you have met who are authentic and genuine. People who fully accept responsibility for what they have done. I am not talking about the case specifically, but those who understand why they came to prison and what was there for them; what they needed to learn.

This was solid and sound guidance which I will be taking and using. I am so blessed and fortunate to have a support system around me to keep me grounded and focused through my transition.
