Independence Day

Well, I am officially celebrating my last holiday in prison. Thank you Lawd! There are a ton of activities planned for the day. There will be another obstacle course, tug of war, and a few other games.

Mama's Girl

When I tell you I love my Mama, that is an understatement. I love that lady with every part of my being. I am so, so happy I had the chance to see her. It is a true testament of how much she really loves me. At 78, almost 79 years old in a few days, this lady figured out a way to get all the way to Kentucky to see me. For that, I am so grateful. I felt like a little girl when I saw my mom. Her smile, her eyes, and her hug told the story of her love for her "Rosebud."

Name On The Board & So Much More

Back when I was in elementary school, the last thing you wanted to see was your name on the board. Well, it is completely the opposite here. When you hear that your name is on the board of the secretary that usually means one thing: TRAVEL PLANS! This morning I was laying in bed when one of my coworkers came into my room to tell me that my name was on the board. I was so excited that I jumped up, got dressed and went downstairs. And as I thought, I was asked about how I was planning on getting from the prison to the halfway house.

Locked In…They Won’t Let Us Out

Day two of not being able to go outside, meaning not being able to do step aerobics. The air quality is poor because of the Canadian wildfires, therefore we have been ordered to stay inside. This has caused me to have some issues with my sinuses too.

Double Dutch Bus

One thing about not having cell phone, Google, Netflix, etc. is you will figure out how to entertain yourself. After receiving four new 16ft jump ropes, about a dozen of us headed outside to relive a few of our childhood memories. We jumped rope, TRIED to double dutch, listened to music, shared stories of the games we used to play as a kid, and simply laughed. It was two hours of fun and camaraderie. It’s moments like these, when your inner child gets to play, that you forget that you are in prison.

Same Old Same Old

Camp life is camp life. Nothing much has changed here. We did get the hot water back on yesterday. We have been showering with cold water since last Thursday. Dinner is still bag lunches. Yesterday, I ate the sandwich which was a huge mistake because I felt it when I worked out. My boss in the GED department pretty much let me go yesterday; well at least we found my replacement. I can't say that I am upset about it because I have my other work detail with culinary events that has a lot of things happening that I need to focus on.

Juneteenth

I am tired today. I haven't done much of anything. After eating a well-prepared Juneteenth holiday meal, I laid around and hung out with my friend all day. We were served bar-b-que chicken, green beans, mac and cheese, and cornbread for lunch. This took me out. And to top it all off I did not even work out. I was acting up!

Fatherless Father's Day

All week I have been thinking about today. I saw people buying Father's Day cards at the commissary this week, mailing them off, making them, etc. All I could think about was Marv. This is my first Father's Day without him.

The Beginning Of The End

Today at 7:30 am, I and fifteen others entered the visitation area to attend the Release Preparation Program as part of the planning for our re-entry to society. Yes, I finally got to attend the coveted re-entry class, which is one of the steps in the release process. It was surreal sitting in that room because I vividly remember sitting in the same place 10 months ago, two days after I reported doing A & O (Admission and Orientation).

What Would You Do?

What would you do if you were me? An inmate who is about to reenter the world. This was the question I asked a trusted advisor yesterday who has a lot of experience with federal prison. I inquired because I have heard that a lot of people have a hard time initially transitioning back into society. From the "inside" all you think about is getting out. However, I am learning that with this newfound freedom, newfound problems also come.

BORED Out Of My Mind!

Bored, bored, bored, bored, bored...that is how I feel. Did I mention that I am bored? Lawd, it feels like time is slowing down. I wanted to quit my job in GED teaching. But, I feel like it will only slow my time down even more because I will not have anything to occupy my time.

Your Gifts Will Make Room For You

Over the past few days, I and a few other ladies had the opportunity to work at my second job, culinary events. I love, love, love it! It’s like for a moment I am back on the outside. We are not in our uniforms or grays. We are surrounded by "real" people, not all inmates, and real food. It sounds cheesy, or even harsh, but it’s the truth. For the past two days, we felt normal, like we were on the outside. I personally felt...creative, excited, rejuvenated, and FREE!

ICE ICE Baby

In federal prison, you just never know what to expect from day to day. Well, today was one of those days when the unexpected occurred. One of the young ladies who lives on my hall and works with me in the culinary events job was picked up by ICE. And just like that, she is gone. Wow! It is crazy. You just never know what will happen, who will be here, and who will be gone in a matter of moments.

The Final Countdown

My case manager also resubmitted the request for me to be released to the halfway house today. Although I have received a tentative date (which I am only disclosing to my family and close friends), she is attempting to get me home a little earlier. I did not expect her to do it so soon, and I honestly did not ask her to. She just offered it to me, and I am truly grateful for that. Now, all I can do is pray and wait for a response.

Memorial Day In the Feds

I have spent yet another holiday in federal prison. Luckily, it is one of the last ones. Today was probably the most active Memorial Day I have ever had. I honestly do not remember doing that much on this holiday when I was on the outside.

L To the Rescue

There is nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, better than a good, close friend. Especially one that knows you so well that you don't even have to say anything. I guess my blog, emails and just overall conversation lately threw up a distress signal and my L came to the rescue. She wasted to time or resources to jump on a plane and come to KY for an in-person visit. For that, her love, and our friendship, I am so grateful and beyond blessed.

Little Sister

I’m in a room full of people, and yet I feel so alone. This lonely feeling isn't new to me; it has been my way of life growing up as an only child. I was surrounded by my cousins who lived within arms reach of my childhood home, but I was the only grandchild without a sibling. I felt then, and still feel, lonely.

Patience Is A Virtue

More people left today; I think four. More leave later this week and a ton next week. That’s the thing about prison camps; someone is always leaving. Most people here have short sentences, are at the end of their sentences, or have violated. The beauty of people leaving is that you know you are about to leave too.

Health Is Wealth

Today was a busy, but good day. It was busy even though I did not go to work. Mondays are always hit or miss when it comes to work. My boss is off on Mondays and we can never get anyone to open the door for us to hold the class. However, my motto is, "let no time be wasted." I use that free time from work to get in a little more exercise.

A Great Week!

I have slowed down on my blogging. I guess I am either very settled, there isn't much going on, or my new workout regimen has taken over my life. I do know as I approach the final part of this journey I want to be more intentional about documenting the end.
